And the first installment will be out in June. I'm very happy with the quality, variety, and amount of submissions that have come in. Submissions will resume in June.

The Land Bridge: Open for Submissions through April, 2010

The Land Bridge is a biannual science fiction and fantasy anthology edited by Zachary Jernigan. The first installment, which will be published as a handsome softcover book from Lulu.com, will be available in June, 2010. I welcome published and new authors, as well as people who don't feel like any sort of author at all.

SUBMISSIONS:

-   Send me whatever you want, as long as it's a complete science fiction or fantasy story.

-   However, stories in the following subgenres are less likely to be accepted: Sword & Sorcery (or anything with elves, dragons, wizards, etc.), Alternative History, Military SF, Post-Apocalyptic SF, and anything ending in punk. This is not to say I won't read these works with an open mind, but they'd better be singular creations in order to be accepted.

-   Stories in the following subgenres are more likely to be accepted: Space Opera, Sociological Science Fiction, Urban/Contemporary Fantasy, and Science Fantasy.

-   I tend toward the literary: To be accepted, your work must be well written and substantive.

-   While I won’t place any restrictions on the tone of your piece, most of the time I don’t like stories that exist only to illustrate what crappy crap happens to crappy people in crappy situations because of some horrible crap they did. In other words, your work has a greater chance of being accepted if it leaves the reader feeling enlightened rather than horribly depressed.

-   Concerning Sex: I intend to publish erotica and sexually-charged pieces from the get-go. I won't publish rape scenes, scenes with underage characters, or stories filled with euphemism-laden porn language (because it's just embarrassing). I general, I'm more accepting of sexually-charged stories than violent stories.

-   Concerning Violence: In short, justify it. I'm not a big fan of super-violent stories and I won't publish sadistic stories. A violent, amoral character is fine, but don't let his or her violence become pornographic.

-   99% of the time, I won't publish stories that promote political ideologies. I won't publish anything that seriously denigrates any race, religion, or sexual orientation.

-   Please do not send anything over 15,000 words.

-   Reprints are fine, as long as you own all the rights. Multiple and simultaneous subs are cool with me.

-   Expect to hear from me pretty quickly. Like within a day or so.

-   I want to work with authors whose stories I like to get the best possible finished product. Thus, I am really big on dialogue and the revision process.

-   Send your story to me as a .doc or .rtf document. Use a normal font (Times, Courier, Helvetica, etc.) and format it like a sane person. Include in the email some little info about yourself, because I like to read that stuff. If I take your story, I'll ask for a full bio later.

-   In the subject line of your email, put SUBMISSION: Title, Author Name.

RIGHTS AND PAY AND JUNK:

-   The Land Bridge is not a paying market, but I also don't charge a reading fee. Free for you; free for me. In the future, I hope to change this and start paying. By installment #2, I intend at least to send out a contributor copy to each author.

-   I am not buying any rights, but if you publish your story anywhere else after this I'd like you to credit us as the first publisher.

-   If you've got a problem with your work being published through Lulu.com or any other pay-on-demand publisher, don't bother sending it my way.

Know Your Editor
[info]thelandbridge
Zachary (Zack) Jernigan is an MFA student in University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast popular fiction program. He possesses no skills that would make him a suitable anthologizer, nor has he much experience editing anything. Indeed, he worries about being sued someday for publishing somebody's story without the proper permission or credits or what-have-you. Nonetheless, he wants to edit and publish a book, so here he is. Be forewarned: he will probably stoop to publishing one of his own stories in the first installment, because he's that annoying mix of raving egomaniac and self-conscious crybaby. He will also publish the work of friends, as well, because he's already on shaky ground with most of them. Announcements concerning his sorry life, as well as a list of his published works, can be found here: [info]zacharyjernigan
